Tcf3 governs stem cell features and represses cell fate determination in skin

Article Abstract:

An inducible system in mice was used to show that upon Tcf3 reactivation, committed epidermal cells induce genes associated with an undifferentiated, Wnt-inhibited state and Tcf3 promotes a transcriptional program shared by embryonic and postnatal stem cells (SCs). The data recommend that in the absence of Wnt signals, Tcf3 might function in skin SCs to maintain an undifferentiated state and, through Wnt signaling, directs these cells along the hair lineage.

Socializing with the neighbors: Stem cells and their niche

Article Abstract:

Stem cells that are nature's gift to multicellular organisms are used in regenerative medicine where one can remove them from their natural environment, propagate them in a culture and transfer them into a foreign tissue environment. Research shows that stem cell niches interact with their environment and the adult stem cell niches and their impact on stem cell biology is examined.

Self-renewal, multipotency, and the existence of two cell populations within an epithelial stem cell niche

Article Abstract:

New methods to allow clonal analyses and engraftment of hair follicles containing a reservoir of stem cells are reported and the two defining features of stem cells, namely self-renewal and multi-potency are demonstrated. Within stem cells there are two distinct populations, one preceding the other temporarily.
