Tests of the function of the song repertoire in Bobolinks

Article Abstract:

The significance of the two-song repertoire of the Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) was investigated. Observed behavior showed that switching between the song types did not correlate with male quality, aggressive motivation and sexual motivation. Neither was it an effort to convey different messages. It was observed, however, that males tended to respond to the playback of a song with the alternate song type. This may indicate that in species with a two-song repertoire, singing the alternate song type could be a functional equivalent of song matching to signal off conspecific intruders.

Song versatility and social context in the Bobolink

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates whether song repertoires are more important intersexually or intrasexually in territorial defense. The Trainer and Peltz (1996) approach to viewing song variations is used to compare the song versatility of territorial male Bobolinks in both male-male and male-female contexts. The analysis suggests that more complex song production is selected intersexually, whereas shorter, less complex song is used intrasexually.

Pacific coast and southwest interior populations of the Hutton's Vireo differ in basic song parameters

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the differences in song parameters between six populations of of the species Hutton's Vireo on the Pacific Coast are discussed. Particular attention is given to analyses of previously recorded material and to properties of sound on the coast and in the interior habitats.
