The cold shock domain protein LIN-28 controls developmental timing in C. elegans and is regulated by the lin-4 RNA

Article Abstract:

The heterochronic gene, lin-28, encodes a predominantly cytoplasmic protein with a cold shock domain and retroviral-type zinc finger motifs. Coordination of developmental timing regulators by lin-4 ribonucleic acid (RNA) was mediated by lin-14 which controls the activity of lin-28 which is also critical for normal developmental timing. Furthermore, the LIN-28 protein which functions in posttranscriptional regulation was localized in the cytoplasm and contained putative RNA-binding motifs.

Heterochronic genes control cell cycle progress and developmental competence of C. elegans vulva precursor cells

Article Abstract:

The development of vulval cells in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans are regulated by genes which control the timing of division by the vulval precursor cells. The precursor cells develop from embryonic tissue, and the three precursor cells which survive become the parent cells for the whole organ. The genetic regulation of cell cycles in precursor cells was investigated by inducing mutations in the lin-14 genes.
