The discovery of metabolic co-operation

Article Abstract:

The accidental discovery of the intercellular exchange of metabolites through the gap junction was termed as metabolic co-operation. The discovery generated disputes and additional experiments to prove or disprove the existence of the mechanism. It was explained that cells formed specific-type of junctions permeable to nucleotides and other forms of metabolites, but not to macromolecules. The gap junction was accepted as the basis for electrical coupling, dye coupling and subsequently, metabolic co-operation.

Search and discovery strategies for biotechnology: the paradigm shift

Article Abstract:

Biotechnology research is undergoing a shift caused by new ways of detecting novel organisms, novel chemical structures, and novel biological activity. Techniques such as DNA sequencing and amplification, genome sequencing and annotation, proteome analysis and phenotypic inventorying have created huge databases of information that can accessed.
