The duty to recontact: attitudes of genetics service providers
Article Abstract:
A self-administered questionnaire has been sent to 1,000 randomly selected Canadian and US members of the American Society of Human Genetics to ask about opinions of genetics professionals on the the issue of the obligation or lack thereof on the part of genetics service providers to contact former patients. Of he questionnaires sent, 252 were completed and returned. The duty to recontact is the possible ethical and/or legal obligation of genetics service providers (GSPs) to contact former patients to give information on research advances that might be relevant to their cases. The practice is not part of current standards of care, but it has been argued that the obligation should be established. Respondents felt that responsibility for staying in touch should be shared by the health professional and the patient. The standard of care issue brought a split decision. About benefits and disadvantages there was no consensus.

Nm23-H1: genetic alterations and expression patterns in tumor metastasis
Article Abstract:
Genetic changes and patterns of expression in tumor metastasis are related to Nm23-H1, an mRNA that accumulates in much higher rates in cells with low metastatic activity. The protein has a unique kinase activity essential in other organisms but the mechanism through which Nm23-H1 regulates differentiation of cells and metastasis is not yet clear although there are clues. Histidine-protein-kinase activity is the only known activity that correlates closely with ability of Nm23-H1 to inhibit motility of cells.
