The evolution of delayed dispersal in cooperative breeders

Article Abstract:

Cooperative breeding occurs when more than two individuals of a single species are involved in the raising of offspring in a single nest. An analysis was conducted to explain this altruistic behavior in birds, with focus on nonbreeding helpers in the nest. Based on the analysis, a model, termed 'delayed-dispersal threshold model' was proposed to identify the ecological factors involved in this phenomenon. These interacting factors include relative population density, fitness differential between early and delayed dispersal, hypothetical fitness of floaters, distibution of territory quality and spatiotemporal environmental variability.

Genetic monogamy in Long-eared Owls

Article Abstract:

The high rate of male parental effort in raptors selects against extra-pair fertilizations (EPFs), as females involved in extra-pair activities are in danger of losing parental investment by males whose confidence in paternity has been diminished because of the behaviour of their mates. Research using DNA fingerprinting to investigate genetic parentage in socially monogamous Long-eared Owls showed no EPFs in 59 nestlings from 12 nests. There was no evidence of nesting aggregations composed of close relatives.
