The granin family of uniquely acidic proteins of the diffuse neuroendocrine system: Comparative and functional aspects

Article Abstract:

The genetically distinct proteins, Chromogranins A (CgA), Chromogranins B (CgB), Secretogranin II (SGII) and the less well known secretogranins III-VII, collectively referred to as 'granins' are characterized by numerous pairs of basic amino acids as potential cleavage sites for processing by the co-stored prohormone converting enzymes PCl/3 and PC22. The comparative and functional aspects of the granins with emphases on their phylogenetically conserved sequences are studied.

The Paleogene fossil record of birds in Europe

Article Abstract:

The Paleogene fossil record of birds in Europe is reviewed and the recent fossil taxa are placed into a phylogenetic framework based on published cladistic analyses. The pre-Oligocene European avifauna is characterized by the complete absence of passeriform birds, which happens to be the most diverse and abundant avian taxon.

Review of the ultrastructure of the nematode body cuticle and its phylogenetic interpretation

Article Abstract:

The phylogenetic interpretation of the nematode cuticle ultrastructure is reviewed within the framework of recent DNA-sequence data. Several structural elements of the cuticle seem to have arisen independently several times within the nematode and thus are highly homoplasious.
