The threat to bank swallows from the hobby at a large colony
Article Abstract:
Predation by hobby falcons on a large colony of bank swallows was studied. Four swallows were the maximum number captured per day, and this occurred only once. There was a significant relationship between the number of attacks and the colony population size, and between the number of swallows caught and the number of swallows available. Attacks were most frequent in the morning and early evening, and correlated with the swallows' alarm calls. The threat to this colony by hobbies seems to be quite low, and was attributed to a dilution effect and the high efficiency of vigilance.

Sexual dimorphism and breeding success in Tree Swallows and Collared Flycatchers
Article Abstract:
Studies at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, Canada, and on the island of Gotland, Sweden, established negative correlations between within-pair sexual dimorphism and the quality or quantity of the offspring of both Tree Swallows and Collared Flycatchers. Differences in body size between the sexes of both species were found to be attributed to factors such as migration timing and male defense against predation.

Male badge size predicts dominance against females in House Sparrows
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the use of male badge size in House Sparrows as a signal of status in a mixed flock of male and female birds. The relationship of badge size to aggressive behavior is discussed.
