The use of fluorogenic substrates to measure fungal presence and activity in soil

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the use of fluorogenic substrates such as 4-methylumbelliferyl N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminide and beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGase) to measure fungal presence and activity in soil. Findings showed that NAGase activity was present in a diverse group of fungi. NAGase activity appeared to be constitutive and was correlated with two independent indicators of fungal biomass. The activity can be quantified in soil samples with a fluorogenic substrate.

Identification and retting efficiencies of fungi isolated from dew-retted flax in the United States and Europe

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the identification and retting efficiencies of fungi taken from flax that was due-retted in Europe and the US. The monocultures include one Aspergillus sojae laboratory culture, two dew-retted flax from Europe and five purified US strains. Retting was observed in all filamentous fungi but not in the isolated yeast. Results suggest that the fungi may be used for bast fiber retting applications.
