The use of mist-net capture rates to monitor annual variation in abundance. A validation study

Article Abstract:

Mist nets are commonly used to monitor changes in species' abundance. A study compares mist-net capture rates of adult Song Sparrows, Wrentits, Spotted Towhees and White-crowned Sparrows during the breeding season at the Palomarin Field Station, with breeding densities taken from the Coastal Scrub Avian Ecology Project (CSAEP). Capture rates correlated significantly with breeding density for Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows and Wrentits, although not for White-crowned Sparrows.

Correcting biased estimates of dispersal and survival due to limited study area: theory and an application using wrentits

Article Abstract:

The study has developed a technique for accurately estimating the dispersal distributions and survival to breeding which is necessary for knowing the gene flow and population demographics. The application of the technique to a 12 year study of natal dispersal in Wrentits, shows an enhancement in the estimate of mean and median dispersal from observed values of 267 and 248 m to corrected values of 375 and 387. The method can be applied with ease.

Demography of a declining population of Warbling Vireos in coastal California

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the results of a 19 year demographic study of a declining population of Warbling Vireos living on the Californian coast. The productivity of the population and adult survival rates are discussed.
