The viable-but-nonculturable state induced by abiotic stress in the biocontrol agent Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 does not promote strain persistence in soil

Article Abstract:

Oxygen limitation and low redox potential create a viable-but-nonculturable strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0. However, this strain did not exhibit increased persistence in soil compared to culturable strains. Therefore, this state does not represent a survival strategy on the part of the bacterium.

Comparison of ATPase-encoding type III secretion system hrcN genes in biocontrol fluorescent pseudomonads and in phytopathogenic proteobacteria

Article Abstract:

The existence of Type III protein secretion systems (TTSS) sequences in a wide range of biocontrol pseudomonads and in phytopathogenic proteobacteria is reported. The results indicate that the occurrence of hrcN in most biocontrol pseudomonads is not the result of recent horizontal gene transfer from phytopathogenic bacteria, although such transfer might have occurred for a minority of biocontrol strains.

Predominance of nonculturable cells of the biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 in the surface horizon of large outdoor lysimeters

Article Abstract:

The spontaneous rifampin-mutant of biocontrol agent Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 was inoculated in soil to study the persistence of CHA0 in large outdoor lysimeters' surface horizon. The number of viable but nonculturable cells were found to be less than 1/4 of the culturable cells after eight months. Results reveal that such climatic factors as soil temperature and water availability influence the predominance of the nonculturable cells.
