Tits, warblers, and finches: Foliage-gleaning birds of nearctic and palearctic boreal forests

Article Abstract:

Two major patterns of abundance of different types of canopy foliage-gleaning birds are described covering four sites in boreal forest. The Chaffinch is abundant in agricultural habitats during the nonbreeding season. It is suggested that warblers do well when there is high resource productivity during the breeding season. Patterns of relative abundance support both the Resource Seasonality Hypothesis and the Ecological Replacement Hypothesis.

Interspecific aggression by Yellow Warblers in a sun coffee plantation

Article Abstract:

Interspecific aggression is common among male Yellow Warblers in the sun coffee plantations of Guatemala. Most of the aggressive and patrolling behavior is directed towards small insectivorous migratory species. The Yellow Warblers are found in the shrub or coffee layer for a considerable time. They displace only birds in a small local area and avoid chasing their subordinates completely from their territory.
