Toxin production by Fusarium species from sugar beets and natural occurrence of zearalenone in beets and beet fibers

Article Abstract:

Postharvest samples of moldy sugar beets were analyzed for the presence of Fusarium sp. as well as the possible toxins associated with this fungus. Fifty-five isolates were obtained, of which 58% caused death in rats, while 73% caused toxic signs in pathological examinations. Fungal cultures yielded a variety of mycotoxins, while analysis of root field samples showed the presence of zearalenone. In addition, zearalenone was detected in 31 of 75 sugar beet fiber samples, indicating that the toxin could survive commercial processing.

Characterization of two polyketide synthase genes involved in zearalenone biosynthesis in Gibberella zeae

Article Abstract:

Two genes designated ZEA1 and ZEA2 were cloned, which encode polyketide synthases (PKS) to participate in the biosynthesis of zearalenone by G. zeae to understand the genetics of biosynthesis of Zearalenne by Gibberella zeae. Quantitative PCR analysis of both PKS genes and six flanking genes supports the view that the two PKS make up the core biosynthetic unit for zearalenone biosynthesis.
