Transfer of genetic material between pathogenic and food-borne yeasts

Article Abstract:

A possible plasmid transfer between Candida glabrata and the Saccharomyces species was studied for evaluating the possibility of gene transfer between pathogenic and food-borne yeasts. The transfer could enable the spread of virulence factors and resistance to medical drugs also between distantly related yeast species and might help in 'transformation' of harmless saprophytes into potential causative agents of human infections.

Acetamide selection of kluyveromyces lactis cells transformed with an integrative vector leads to high-frequency formation of multicopy strains

Article Abstract:

The effect of the selection method on the frequency of multicopy expression vector integration at the LAC4 chromosomal locus in populations of transformed K. lactis cells is examined. It shows that selection on acetamide medium nearly completely enriched transformant populations for cells harboring two tandem copies of an integrated expression vector.

Characterization of a nucleus-encoded chitinase from the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis

Article Abstract:

Endogenous proteins secreted from Kluyveromyces lactis were screened for their ability to bind to or to hydrolyze chitin. This analysis resulted in identification of a nucleus-encoded extracellular chitinase with a chitinolytic activity distinct from that of the plasmid-encoded killer toxin alpha-subunit.
