Translational readthrough in the hdc mRNA generates a novel branching inhibitor in the Drosophila trachea

Article Abstract:

Fusion-6 (Fus-6) is a branching inhibitor produced by specialized tracheal cells to stop nearby cells from branching. This functions as the headcase gene (hdc) and works in a inhibitory signalling mechanism and determines the cells that will have unicellular sprouts in the trachea. Translational readthorugh is essential as a full-length cDNA is needed for the rescue of the tracheal mutant phenotype.

The hypoxia-induced paralogs Scylla and Charybdis inhibit growth by down-regulating S6K activity upstream of TSC in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

Two homologous genes, Scylla and carbides, identified as growth suppressors in an EP (enhancer/promoter) overexpression screen are shown to act as negative regulators of growth. It is shown that Scylla and carbides are induced under hypoxic conditions and that Scylla is a target of Drosophila HIF-1 thus establishing a potential cross-talk between growth and oxygen sensing.

Regulation of POU genes by castor and hunchback establishes layered compartments in the Drosophila CNS

Article Abstract:

Castor (cas) is required for the correct CNS expression of all Drosophila POU genes. Hunchback (hb), the gap segmentation gene regulator, functions with cas to maintain temporal subdivisions in the circuitry of the cells. This enables proper CNS development. The details of the study are provided.
