Transvection in the iab-5,6,7 region of the bithorax complex of Drosophila: homology independent interactions in trans
Article Abstract:
The iab-5, iab-7 and iab-6 regulatory regions in the Abdominal-B (Abd-B) gene of the bithorax complex (BX-C) of Drosophila control the expression of identities in the fifth, sixth and seventh abdominal segments and genital segments. These three regions are capable of promoting the sixth and fifth abdominal segment identities even in the absence of the Abd gene. This property of the regulatory regions is caused by the interaction of the iab-5, iab-7 and iab-6 with Abd-B in trans.

Control of distal antennal identity and tarsal development in Drosophila by spineless-aristapedia, a homolog of the mammalian dioxin receptor
Article Abstract:
The spineless (ss) gene of the Drosophila plays a crucial role in the structuring of the distal regions of the antenna and the leg. Its molecular characterization is described. ss expression is possible in the antenna and the leg only if the master regulator of ventral appendage formation, Distal-less, is present. The impact of ss loss-of-function mutations are analyzed.

RadA protein is an archaeal RecA protein homolog that catalyzes DNA strand exchange
Article Abstract:
Isolation of a Rad51/RecA protein homolog from the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus shows that it is a DNA-dependent ATPase which facilitates DNA pairing and strand exchange. The finding that RecA and Rad 51 are similarly structured led to their examination in Eucarya and to their presence in Archaea, the third domain of life.
