UV B-induced vertical migrations of cyanobacteria in a microbial mat

Article Abstract:

The cyanobacteria Microcoleus chthonoplastes in the microbial mats from the Solar Lake, Egypt, migrate downwards when exposed to UV B radiations. The surface of the mats becomes lighter in color, and the photosynthetic capacity, reflectance, and porewater oxygen levels decrease. Maximum porewater oxygen concentration and gross photosynthesis occur at a greater depth. These changes are reversed as the cyanobacteria move upwards when the radiations cease. The cells of M. chthonoplastes migrate to reduce the harmful effects of the radiations.

Molecular population genetics and phenotypic diversification of two populations of the thermophilic cyanobacterium Mastigocladus laminosus

Article Abstract:

The distributions of genetic and phenotypic variation for two Yellowstone National Park populations of the heterocyst-forming cyanobacterium Mastigocladus laminosus that exhibit dramatic phenotypic differences as a result of environmental differences in nitrogen availability are investigated. Population genetic model suggest that local adaptation is mutation limited but also that the populations are expected to continue to diverge due to low migratory gene flow.

Variation in sulfide tolerance of photosystem II in phylogenetically diverse cyanobacteria from sulfide habitats

Article Abstract:

Physiological and molecular phylogenetic approaches were used to investigate variations among twelve cyanobacterial strains in their tolerance of sulfide. Sulfide tolerance is a dynamic trait dictated by environmental variations and it can be concluded that sulfide toxicity resulted from inhibition of the donor side of the photosystem.
