Relationship between heterozygosity and asymmetry: a test across the distribution range

Article Abstract:

Heterozygosity and asymmetry and the relationship between the two are discussed based on a test across the distribution range. Asymmetry may be a useful tool for estimated changes in environmental stress, but it may not be widely useful for estimating genetic stress. The heterozygosity levels in 26 loci and asymmetry in third toe length in 11 populations of the chukar partridge, Alectrois chukar, across a sharp climatic gradient in Israel from the arid part through the Mediterranean-desert ecotone toward the Mediterranean. Genetic diversity estimated using observed and expected heterozygosity was not associated with asymmetry. Heterozygosity peaked at the ecotone; asymmetry went up monotonically toward the range periphery.

Variance of protein heterozygosity in different species of mammals with respect to the number of loci studied

Article Abstract:

The wide scatter of protein heterozygosity in different mammal species has been shown to be explained by the small number of loci studied, usually 20-30. As a greater number of loci is studied, the mean of the heterozygosity does not change, but its variance among different species goes down in accordance with a Poisson distribution.

A meta-analysis of fluctuating asymmetry in relation to heterozygosity

Article Abstract:

A study of generality of association between fluctuating asymmetry (FA), random departure from perfect bilateral symmetry, and heterozygosity (H) has been carried out using meta-analysis by converting test statistics for relationship into a common effect size, Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient. A database with 41 studies and 118 individual samples was used. It has been hypothesized that there is an inverse correlation, and the claim is widely repeated, but some studies dispute it. Weak association at the most was found.
