Variation in growth rate in a natural assemblage of unicellular green soil algae

Article Abstract:

A study has been carried out to analyze the diversity of a motile, phototropic green soil algae community by looking at its response to different culture conditions to make it possible to measure the rate and extent of sorting and to compare direct and correlated selection responses. The magnitude of a type-by-environment interaction and the sorting of variation in novel environments is reported. Isolates, spores, were extracted from soil samples along a 25-m transect. All sets of lines were adapted to the selection environment in time. The extent of the advance depended on the amount of among-spore variance in the founder assemblage.

Constraints on adaptive mutations in the codling moth Cydia pomonella (L.): measuring fitness trade-offs and natural selection

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on insecticide-resistant mutants of moth Cydia pomonella. The effect of fitness trade-offs on the insecticide resistance has been investigated via the study of the frequencies of diflubenzuron-resistant phenotypes in the heterogeneous population under insecticide-free conditions, and the results are discussed.

Estimation of spontaneous genome-wide mutation rate parameters: Whither beneficial mutations?

Article Abstract:

Spontaneous genomewide mutation rate parameters have been estimated and are discussed in this review article. Most mutations found in mutation accumulation experiments are harmful to the organism. The rate of helpful mutations can be debated, and their effects can be debated.
