Weaning practices of the Makushi of Guyana and their relationship to infant and child mortality: A preliminary assessment of international recommendations

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the term of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and infant and child mortality among a group of swidden-horticulturalists in lowland South America. The findings proposed that the apparent lack of benefit of EBF for at least six months is due to insufficient energy supply from breast milk alone, which predisposes the child to morbidity when subsequently stressed.

Multiple mortality optima due to heterogeneity in the birth cohort: A continuous model of birth weight by gestational age-specific infant mortality

Article Abstract:

A Covariate Density Defined mixture of logistic regressions (CDDmlr) model of birth outcomes is investigated. Multiple birth weight by gestational age optimal mortalities are observed in the birth weight by gestational age-specific mortality surface.

Variability of gestational age distributions by sex and ethnicity: an analysis using mixture models

Article Abstract:

Human gestational age distributions are heterogeneous, like birthweight, but exhibit a different pattern and direction of variation. The results point to the utility of a multivariate mixture model incorporating birthweight and gestational age.
