"Well-bear and well-rear" in China?
Article Abstract:
A survey of Chinese geneticists reveals a different attitude toward eugenics than that of researchers in North America and western Europe, reflecting a collective approach to social ethics rather than an individualistic one. The Maternal and Infant Health Care Law adopted by China in 1994 is progressive in officially promoting women and children's health, although parts of the law are not in conformity with international human rights norms.

A model agreement for genetic research in socially identifiable populations
Article Abstract:
Negotiations with the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma have resulted in an agreement for genetic research that could be a model for work with other socially identifiable groups. Individual informed consent may not be adequate to address the collective issues involved in genetic research. With the Apache population, appropriate public and private social units were identified and involved in a communal process to reach a consensus.

The role of community review in evaluating the risks of human genetic variation research
Article Abstract:
Experiences working on genetic research with Native American communities suggests that community review can be valuable. Community review can contribute to identification and minimization of risks and help promote recruitment and retention of research participants. Private social units such as families may need to become involved. Community concerns can be taken into consideration without giving veto power to communities.
