Winter foraging ecology of Bald Eagles in Arizona
Article Abstract:
The winter foraging ecology of a concentration of Bald Eagles along the Colorado River in Arizona was studied. The eagles' foraging activity was observed and recorded within a three square kilometer area. The recorded data includes the date and time of foraging, the eagles age and habitat, the foraging method, the attack method, the prey status and type, the success of attempt and the distance to the nearest shore. Results showed that adult eagles exhibited greater foraging success than immature ones regardless of attack method, prey abundance and habitat.

Body length and wing length provide univariate estimates of overall body size in the Merlin
Article Abstract:
The length of the body and wings give an accurate estimate of the overall body size of Merlins, predatory birds. A study of Merlin body size using nine morphological characters shows that repeatabilities are similar for bone and feather characters. There are strong correlations within rather than between bone and feather characters. The tail length shows large individual variations in males, while foot span and length of middle toe shows larger variations in females. Females have a 5% to 10% larger size than males.

Establishment of mass hierarchies in broods of the black kite
Article Abstract:
The development of size hierarchies for Black Kite broods was examined in terms of hatching asynchrony, growth of first-hatched chicks and egg mass. Brood size, laying date, breeder experience and other factors were also considered for their impact on hierarchies. Relative growth of first-hatched chicks determined chick mass hierarchy level, while egg mass variations had minimal impact.
