20D00msday update
Article Abstract:
The so-called year 2000 computer program error is expected to cause more problems to businesses than originally thought. This computer bug, which will read the '2000' entry in the double-digit year field as '1900,' can be dealt with by making corrections to data files, utility programs, operating systems and hardware as early as possible. In certain situations, however, the introduction of new programs, systems and even hardware may be the best solution. Further exacerbating the problems of companies is the fact that this could result in litigation and disclosure troubles. Those organizations that refuse to fix this date problem exposes themselves to lawsuits from stockholders, partners long-term debt holders and third-parties. Non-disclosure of the problem could also be perceived as fraud by some litigators.

Another client, another language? Thought about machine translation?
Article Abstract:
The increasing globalization of business has significantly increased the demand for programs that can perform machine translation of foreign languages. However, such need remains unmet because of a number of technical difficulties. For one, word-for-word translation or word swapping is ineffective because the context of word usage usually totally changes the meaning, thereby distorting the intended message. This problem is heightened when idiomatic expressions are sprinkled on conversations. Fortunately, artificial intelligence is making machine translations more reliable. For now, professional translators and non-speakers can use tools and translators which are divided into three categories: wordbooks and tools, machine translators, and machine-assisted human translators.

Quite please, I'm teaching my computer to write
Article Abstract:
There is a need to develop a more natural way for people to interact with computers. The current practice of using keyboards is highly unnatural because it creates a gap between people and their ideas, which should be the core of communication. Keyboarding is also a very antiquated operation, predating the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant and changing little since the very first silent movies portrayed office workers in the early 20th century. Computer users continue to pound on individual letters and numbers on the keyboard at an age when computer monitors now offer colors, motion and three dimensions, while computer sounds have gone fully digital. The technology allowing interface with a voice is already available, but it has yet to achieve general acceptance.
