The major function of a purchasing department is to evaluate the performance of vendors who provide a company with its supplies. Various procedures can be set up to assure good performance of a vendor. These procedures include surveying vendors, listing critical suppliers and visiting qualified vendors. A quantitative rating system should be set up to rate prospective vendors. The purchasing department should also be able to analyze time of delivery performance and quantity performance. Companies using supplier rating systems have shown an increase in profitability.
