A socio-technical systems approach to cell design: case study and analysis
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive socio-technical model of cell manufacturing system design and implementation was described. The viability of the approach was tested in a Fortune 500 corporation and the influence of socio-technical system principles on cell design was analyzed. Results showed that several factors determine the successful adoption of manufacturing cells, including cell assignments, general decisions about structure and operation, detailed design and implementation. Adherence to socio-technical system principles of joint optimization, strategic focus and employee involvement were found to be the most significant determinants of cell design and implementation.

Work cells with staying power: lessons for process-complete operations
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of an operating-level concept known as a process-complete architecture and commonly called a cell that support objectives long after their initiation, are identified. The effectiveness of cells in terms of key operating priorities such as quality, cost, delivery speed and the ability to meet the changing needs of the customers are discussed.

Managing learning curves in factories by creating and transferring knowledge
Article Abstract:
Factories show considerable variation in learning rates and can change the rate of learning by managing deliberate learning efforts. Conceptual learning and operational learning are identified as the two dimensions of the learning process. It is essential to have a stable environment with continuity in resources, to enhance knowledge creation.
