Discontinuous innovation and the new product development process

Article Abstract:

Discontinuous innovation management differs markedly from conventional new product development (NPD) management. Data obtained from eight discontinuous product development projects showed that participating firms do not utilize a formal, highly structured process in managing discontinuous NPD activities. Instead, such firms undertake a consistent, logical process that is much different from incremental NPD processes in developing radical innovations.

A buyer's perception of a new product's distinctions from other products ultimately determine its market success. A strategic approach which considers the buying behavior desired can increase the success of product introduction.
