A total overhaul: four years ago, Weyerhaeuser built an internal network to boost productivity and cut costs. It has done much more than that

Article Abstract:

Weyerhaeuser Co, Marshfield, WI, began implementing a state-of-the-art intranet four years ago, and now, in 1998, has been working with its highly successful network for a considerable time. The system, called DoorBuilder, has enabled the forest-products company to accomplish various tasks, such as tracking inventory and comparing prices, in a highly efficient way, which has had the effect of minimizing production times and manufacturing costs. Now, Weyerhaeuser is finding that DoorBuilder is having even more far-reaching effects because the system is causing the company to rethink and reshape its production-and distribution process. Industry observers describe this as 'reconfiguring the value chain.' According to Stanford University communications expert Francois Bar, network technology creates a potential for new patterns of economic activity.

Home-run heroes bring in few endorsements

Article Abstract:

Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa recently broke the single-season home-run record in professional baseball, but together they have less than $2 million signed in endorsements, those with McDonald's and only for one year. There are a number of theories as to why this is the case, one of which is the relative superstardom of these players; another is personalities. Michael Jordan tops the list of players with $40 million-plus.
