AMD 1st-quarter results beat estimates

Advanced Micro Devices' first quarter net income was $189.3 million, at $1.15 per share, partially on the strength of sales of its Athlon microprocessor. AMD has been challenging front-runner Intel with pricier semiconductors. The company's market share went from 16.6% to 17% in the 4th quarter.

AMD net surged in 4th quarter, but failed to meet expectations

Advanced Micro Devices reported net income of $178 mil, on sales of $1.18 bil. 1999 results were $65 mil on sales of $969 mil. Analysts had targeted 2000 sales of $1.2 bil. for the semiconductor maker, but AMD cited weak holiday PC sales. Some analysts forsee a price war as PC sales continue to decline in 2001. AMD maintained a market share of 17%, against industry leader Intel's 81.7%.

AMD posts 92% drop in profit and forecasts declines in sales
