AMP toughens defense against AlliedSignal bid

AlliedSignal Inc. has made a $9.99 billion hostile takeover bid for AMP Inc., which has responded by strengthening its defenses against acquisition. AMP has amended the company's poison pill shareholders rights plan to kick in when anyone purchases over ten percent of the company. AMP, the electronic-connector manufacturer which is based in Harrisburg, Pa., has angered its own shareholders with the new defense initiative. AlliedSignal has said that it will challenge AMP's decision in federal court on September 28.

BCI to sell Comcast a 30% interest in Jones Intercable for $500 million

BCI Communications Holding Co. plans to sell a 30% stake in Jones Intercable Inc. to Comcast Corp. The deal includes an option for Comcast to buy additional shares in 1999. Many Jones subscribers are conveniently located in the Washington, DC area near the Comcast markets. Comcast will be paying 10 times cash flow, which is a good indication of the financial health of cable companies.
