Accountants offer web sites their seal of approval

Article Abstract:

Accounting firms are auditing company world wide web sites, and those companies can display an electronic authentication seal, the WebTrust, to indicate that the company's business and security practices have been audited. Security remains a big issue for Internet users, with 90% fearing they will have credit information compromised online. WebTrust seals are displayed on web sites, and users can click on the seal's icon to view the audit report. The WebTrust authentication was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Smarter than the average card

Article Abstract:

Many Australians will be using multi-application smart card technology, as smart card developers improve technology and usage. By 2003, the number of smart cards in use will have climbed to 6.3 billion from 900 million in 1997. Smart cards will integrate communications, transportation, loyalty, and secure access applications. Telstra Corp. has been involved in several smart card trials and, given its conversion of pay phones to accept smart cards, is well positioned to lead the market.

New players will liven up mobiles

Article Abstract:

With four new entrants into Australia's mobile phone industry, new technology services and cheaper calls will boost subsribers. The market now has six million users with 7.5 million expected in 2000. Australia's mobile calls are the most expensive in the world, but the new entrants plan to reduce call charges by 50-80%. Value-added services will also attract customers. The goal is to make the mobile phone an information, and not just a communications, tool.
