Data on 108 new product development projects from different industries were used to analyze the characteristics, development challenges, typical outcomes and success factors for these projects at different locations in the product family spectrum. Results indicated that platform and derivative projects are generally executed in similar ways, managerial approaches are associated with higher project execution success and the use of interdependent technologies and novel project objectives are associated with project execution failure for platform projects.
