Assisted suicide: federal court strikes down N.Y. ban

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Apr 2, 1996, that a New York state law banning physician-assisted suicide is unconstitutional, citing the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. Another Appeals Court made a similar ruling regarding Washington state's law. Both states plan to appeal.

Army reportedly puts down insurrection

Dissident members of Iraq's Republican Guard unit reportedly staged a revolt on Jun 14, 1995, that was quickly put down by forces loyal to Pres Saddam Hussein. Travelers visiting Al Anbar, Iraq reported that there was rioting in May 1995, that resulted in at least 30 deaths.

The US Patent Office on Sep 22, 1992, turned down an application by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for patents on pieces of human genetic code. The NIH had applied for patents on the DNA fragments in 1991.
