Auto makers experiment with new fuels; cleaner-burning synthetic-diesel mix could go in bigger vehicles

Article Abstract:

Ford, GM, and Chrysler are all at different stages in the same effort to bring a cleaner-burning fuel to vans and sport-utility-vehicles. The companies are experimenting with a synthetic fuel made from natural gas that is expected to comprise about one-fourth of the mix with diesel fuel. Regulators are expected to make emissions standards even stricter than they are now, standards which current diesel fuel would not comply with. The Big Three are working with oil companies in the experiment; the Syntroleum Corp. is supplying the synthetic fuel for the tests.
