Beenup, Broken Hill Proprietary Co Ltd's ilmenite mine near Augusta, Western Australia, suffers from drawbacks including failure of safety measures and resulting among an inexperienced workforce. The company may be forced to sell its holdings because of difficulty in processing the ore and environmental damages from tailings. BHP has a contract with Tinfoss, of Norway, to supply ilemite.

Mining junior makes hay with BHP's cast-off

Western Metals has turned the mine it purchased from BHP into part of a multiple-small-mine growth strategy. The company plans to supplement the purchase with a metal smelting deal with Asia, a possible deal with India and increased exploration in the former BHP mine. Production projections for 1999 place Western Metals as the seventh largest producer worldwide.
