Cash poor European countries look to private investors to finance public sector infrastructure projects. Bechtel Group Inc. is taking advantage of the opportunities in Europe. Bechtel is exploring public/private partnerships. It has invested in European rail links, roads, and power plants. The company is an operating partner as well as the builder in its investments. "European Monetary Union means less public spending so private funding is important to meet the needs of the public sector," says Thomas Barrett, who runs the European Investment Bank's division for transport and energy.

Electricite de France (EDF) is experiencing a major power struggle between two of its leading executives. The conflict has stripped the state-owned EDF without any real market strategy as several competitors are getting ready to enter into the once-protected French market. ABB restructures its management, business segments

ABB Asea Brown Boveri unveiled a reshuffling in its management structure that will eliminate the firm's regional reporting structure. The reshuffling will also refocus ABB's wide-range of business operations along global lines. The company, an international engineering entity, will divide up some of its current business segments into smaller units. These units will be more focused.
