The staff squeeze

Article Abstract:

With a tight United States labor market, human resources departments are finding new methods to recruit and maintain productive employees. HR departments are turning to outsourcing functions, new recruitment tools such as the Internet, flexible work schedules, and "knowledge management." More companies are focusing on work/life benefits. Flextime is important, as 25% of U.S. households are caregivers. Knowledge management, the sharing and managing of a company's information assets with employees, is a growing trend. Twenty seven percent of companies have a chief knowledge officer (CKO).

U.S. rates harbingers on the fence

Article Abstract:

Most financial observers believe that the open market committee, the Federal Reserve Board's interest-rate setting group, will be divided on the need for an interest rate increase when it meets on June 29, 1999. Those against an immediate hike, who seem to outnumber the rate hike proponents, want to wait for further signs of inflation to act. John Lonski of Moody's Investors Service believes the consumer price index will rise from 2.1% in May 1999 to 2.4% by year-end 1999.
