Boardroom leadership: do small and medium companies need non-executive directors?
Article Abstract:
The contribution of non-executive directors (NEDs) on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) was examined. Results showed that the power of NEDs on SME boards to influence boardroom decisions and review progress depends on many factors, including their standing and position as individuals. NEDs in SMEs were found to significantly add value to the performance of the boards to which they belong in that they made more direct and involved contribution as compared to their counterparts in listed companies. Moreover, they were shown to foster formality and discipline to boardrooms. Respondents to the study encouraged more SMEs to consider hiring NEDs, although the realization of this recommendation maybe hampered by several challenges, not least of which is convincing these firms that NEDs indeed add value. Concerned institutions and agencies should launch a campaign to promote NEDs.

Goodwill and the third place - business or society?
Article Abstract:
The keen interest of the late Professor Keith MacMillan in evolving fruitful business associations instrumental to an organization's success is viewed from a historical, conceptual and pragmatic viewpoint. The professor's life and works are examined, with the observation that his theory of human goodwill intermingling with hard business dealings is also applied in his practical life.
