Bricks and mortar out in new lending regime

Article Abstract:

Australia's big banks have changed the way in which they determine whether to approve a business loan. They used to approve loans to businesses whose underlying assets were sufficient to cover the loans, but they have begun focusing instead on business' sustainable cashflow. The change was prompted by low inflation rates and the early 1990s collapse of property values.

The Australian government claims there is almost no money left of the $500 million grant which was budgeted for to help small businesses implement the newly introduced Goods and Services Tax in 2000.
