Building materials industry stocks have performed will in the first six months of 2001 with American Woodmark being a standout. However, asbestos litigation, the slowing economy, and other issues may have an effect on the industry. Investors should focus on the more diversified companies.

Stocks in the building materials industry have remained strong during the 1st qtr of 2001. Lower mortgage rates in the US should help the industry, also, but materials and energy costs may have a negative impact. Investors need to be selective when evaluating these stocks.
