Research on mass customization, where manufacturers produce distinctive individual items using low cost production methods, is presented, with focus on the grouping of enterprises on the basis of the extent of customer input.

A new conceptual model of manufacturing strategy is developed from the existing literature and is tested using data collected from a sample of US manufacturers.

Business environment, operations strategy, and performance: an empirical study of Singapore manufacturers

Article Abstract:

The impact of environmental factors on the operations strategy and performance of Singapore manufacturers is studied using a path analytic framework. Results show that environmental factors such as labor availability, competitive hostility and market dynamism influence the selection of operations strategy. High- and low-performing companies also apply different operations strategies in response to environmental stimuli.
