The Australian October 1998 election is stigmatized by coalition and Labor proposals to alter the capital gains tax regime and tighten investment regulations for self-managed superannuation funds. Personal investors, businesses, and trusts are expected to react with a massive sell-off of capital assets. The sell-off will be triggered by such factors as the removal of CGT exemption for pre-impost assets and taxation of trusts as companies.
