CGT clearance sale, everything must go

Article Abstract:

The Australian October 1998 election is stigmatized by coalition and Labor proposals to alter the capital gains tax regime and tighten investment regulations for self-managed superannuation funds. Personal investors, businesses, and trusts are expected to react with a massive sell-off of capital assets. The sell-off will be triggered by such factors as the removal of CGT exemption for pre-impost assets and taxation of trusts as companies.

GST holds some nasty takeover surprises

Australia's goods and services tax (GST) will have a significant impact on businesses planning to acquire another business. To avoid potential problems, businesses are advised to conduct GST due diligence examinations before any acquisition. Tax solicitor Robert Richards feels that many corporate advisers are unaware that GST will impact a takeover.
