Issues concerning plans for diversification and expansion of retail activities taken by Australian petrol retailer and refines Caltex are discussed. Particular attention is given to reasons behind the decision, including decreasing instability of profits from fuel retailing.

The financial performance of Australia's principle department stores is analysed. The reasons for their decreasing market share since 1991 and the marketing strategies employed by Myer-Grace Bros and David Jones are examined.
