Uncertainty plays a large part in investing, and entrepreneurs do not always use the same investment criteria as venture capitalists. Ventures often take longer than expected. Timing and luck have a role, but preliminary investigation is invaluable. Investors should determine whether the business plan is cohesive, the risks have been identified and accounted for, the returns will cover the risks, and the management team is motivated and competent.
