Declining inventory rates and increased exports have helped the balance of trade in chemical products. The market for chemicals in China is growing, especially for fertilizer, but political problems may pose a risk for some companies. Demand for polyethylene terephthalate, used for food containers and soda bottles, is growing for environmental and other factors. There are several stocks here for long-term, conservative investment.

The negative economic factors affecting the diversified chemical industry during the year 2001 have remained the same, and this is not likely to change in the near future. Profits for the fertilizer industry have reached lows, as well. These stocks are not timely for investors in 2001 and 2002.
