Coles Myer adds some verve with 'concept' retailing

Coles Myer is deploying its new growth strategy by launching 10 retailing concept experiments in 1997. Each concept targets a specific niche in different areas, so that they will not compete with Myer's existing stores. After the failure of Myer's untested World 4 Kids toy stores, company divisions spent more time developing the new concepts, which include sports, electronics and home furnishings.

Going upmarket will not set Myer-Grace Bros apart

Dennis Eck, the chief executive of Australian reatiler Coles Myer, has been criticized for everything from poor stock performance, to slow sales, and the lack of a clear succession plan. With Eck's new plan to revive the company's flagging department store chain, Myer-Grace, and Australians doing less discretionary spending, Eck looks set to come into more criticism.
