College football season opens

The college football season began on Aug 28, 1993. Florida State beat Kansas in the Kickoff Classic on Aug 28, 1993, while North Carolina beat Southern California in the Pigskin Classic on Aug 29, 1993. The USA Today and Associated Press preseason polls ranked Florida State as the top team.

Nebraska routs Florida in college football title game

The University of Nebraska Cornhuskers won the Division I college football title on Jan 2, 1996, after it defeated the University of Florida Gators in the Fiesta Bowl by a score of 62-24. The game was Nebraska's 25th consecutive win. An AP poll ranked Nebraska the top team.
