Compaq confirms talks on setting industry standard for workstations

Compaq Computer Corp has confirmed that it is negotiating with hardware and software companies, intending to form an industry coalition to develop workstation standards. Analysts view this as an attempt by the company to break into the lucrative workstation market. The new product could be based on Mips Computer Systems Inc's R4000 workstation microprocessor, and Compaq confirms that both Mips and software giant Microsoft Corp have been approached concerning the alliance. The alliance is a threat to workstation market leader Sun Microsystems Inc, which already has enlisted companies including AT&T to support its Scalable Product Architecture (SPARC) hardware. Some analysts believe that, if an alliance such as this is to succeed, it must begin within the next two years.

AT&T plans to close facility in Memphis to aid NCR merger

Article Abstract:

AT&T will shut down a computer repair and distribution facility in Memphis, TN. The 20,000-square-foot facility, which was opened only a year ago in 1990, is seen as superfluous in light of AT&T's merger with NCR Corp. AT&T says it will help its 230 Memphis employees, which includes 184 workers and 46 managers, to find work elsewhere, possibly in AT&T. Another plant, which is in Little Rock, AR, might also be closed. AT&T officials note that it is unusual the acquiring company in a merger suffers a plant shutdown as a result of the merger.
