Compaq looks to the Web to fuel sales

Article Abstract:

Compaq will introduce an Internet-friendly Presario Internet PC line and establish custom orders from stores. Both moves, scheduled for announcement Jun 9, 1998, represent an industry shift from extra features to logging on. The Presario Internet PC keyboards feature four new keyboard buttons that direct users to selected places and programs for quickly accessing electronic mail, shopping services and search services. Alliances with several dozen Internet companies such as America Online, GTE and Yahoo! will allow Compaq to draw monthly services fees in proportion to customer use. A Compaq official said the company hopes to attract 70% of its customers for on-line services in the short term and grow a $1 billion business from the fees by 2001. The company plans to expand its custom order service to 4,000 stores by the end of 1998. Customers will receive their computers for delivery a few days later.

PC makers rushing out spring lineups; new features are designed to fix disappointing sales

Article Abstract:

HP, Gateway 2000, Acer America and AST Research are all releasing new PCs with enhanced functionality in an attempt to compensate for slow Christmas 1995 sale. HP's Pavilion line of Pentium-based systems will include greater memory and faster performing CD-ROM drives and processors. The $2,649 HP Pavilion 7130P offers an integrated photo scanner, a feature that many analysts believe will become a major selling-point for the line. Gateway 2000's Destination series of Pentium-based systems will provide a high-quality terminal to enhance multimedia applications and offer TV programming. Acer America and AST Research are each bringing out 150MHz and 166MHz systems in the $2,500 price range and intend to aggressively market their surplus units to increase back sales.
