Congress clears, Bush vetoes election-year tax changes

Article Abstract:

Pres Bush vetoed a $77.5-billion tax bill Mar 20, 1992, that would have given a tax cut to the middle class. The cut would have been financed by raising taxes for the wealthy. Bush used the veto to begin an election-year rhetorical attack on Congress.

Pres George Bush was not expected to sign a tax and urban-aid bill that was approved by Congress on Oct 8, 1992. The bill contained tax increases, which Pres Bush wanted to avoid for political reasons related to the presidential campaign.

House, Senate approve tax bill
