Australian rock group Savage Garden is enjoying financial and critical success due to manager John Woodruff's deal-making after several rejections. When major record companies refused to deal, Woodruff chose Roadshow Music for double the usual royalty rate and creative control. The band earned an estimated $11 million in 1997, with album sales of 2.4 million.

Country music tries to strike a more responsive chord

The Country Music Association (CMA) is attempting to improve the genre's popularity in Australia by intensive, hands-on marketing. In a week-long visit in Feb. 1998, the CMA went to Australian radio and TV stations, retailers and industry associations promoting new artists and acts. "New country" is closer to pop music and may find a niche.
